Those who fulfill this office do so as representatives of the assembly. They bring to the altar the offerings of the people signified by the bread, the wine, and the monetary support the assembly offers in the collection. In the early Church individuals brought whatever they wished to offer to the Church in procession to the priest who in turn distributed the offerings to those in need. Today those individual offerings are represented by the collection taken up prior to the offertory.

It has been a long tradition in the Church that families bring up the gifts. Any family of Holy Redeemer may become a part of this offering.
